Spinal epidural metastases are observed in 5-10% of cancer patients and are known as the most common spinal tumor. These metastases represent severe clinical entitites arising from the dissemination of systemic malignancies to the spine, often resulting in spinal cord compression, pain and neurological defisits. They most commonly originate from lung (31%), breast (24%), and prostate (16%) cancers. The spread is most often hematogenous, with the thoracic spine being the most common area. The prominent treatment method for spinal epidural tumors is separation surgery, a surgical technique aimed at reducing spinal cord pressure by creating an appropriate anatomical separation, followed by safe radiotherapy. This article evaluates the epidemiology, pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, diagnostic methods, and current treatment approaches of spinal epidural metastases.
